Traditional Making Process
The quality of a cow dung cake depends heavily on the source and the drying method. Here is how authentic Desi Cow Dung Cakes are made:
-
Collection: Fresh dung is collected specifically from Indigenous (Desi) Cows. The dung of Desi cows is preferred because of its unique microbial composition and higher medicinal value.
-
Mixing: The fresh dung is often mixed with a small amount of hay or straw. This acts as a binder, providing structural integrity and helping the cake burn more steadily.
-
Hand-Molding: Small portions of the mixture are taken and hand-pressed into circular or oval shapes. Traditional makers often leave their palm prints on the cakes, which is a hallmark of handmade authenticity.
-
Sun-Drying: The molded cakes are placed on a clean surface or stuck to walls to dry naturally under direct sunlight. This process takes 4 to 7 days depending on the weather.
-
Curing: Complete drying is crucial. A well-cured cake should be lightweight, hard, and completely moisture-free to ensure it burns without producing excessive, irritating smoke.
